Staunton-on-Wye Primary School

Find out what has been going on in our school.

As part of our whole school topic all of the children and staff went on a day trip to Borth.  They took part in a sandcastle competition and explored the rock pools.  We also visited the Life Boat Centre and found out how they rescue people.

This display shows artwork produced by Class 3 as part of a cross-curricular topic on wildlife in the school grounds.  Each child chose an animal to research and to represent in a work of art.  They did sketches of appropriate backgrounds and then chose a combination of painting, printing, drawing and collage to make a background for their animal.  The animal was made using paint, paper and collage techniques.  In science the children produced books containing information about their chosen creature.  FOR MORE PICTURES ON THIS TOPIC SEE THE GALLERY!

Class 3 have made nestboxes and have put them up in Bulmers’ orchard next to the school. They will visit them regularly to monitor how many birds use them over the nesting season. Mr. Field, the orchard manager, explained to us how apple trees produce fruit and what can be done to help wildlife in the orchard.

Residential trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology. Most of the children in Years 4, 5 and 6 went on this 4-day trip in May 2008. We stayed in an eco-cabin at CAT where we had to monitor how much energy we were using and how it was produced.  We learnt about the natural world, renewable energy and sustainable living. We also visited the Rheidol Hydro-electric Power Station, Ynyslas beach, Carno windfarm and Gigrin Red-Kite Centre.

   Class 1 Welly Walk

We go on a walk every Friday afternoon, rain or shine! We have several short routes to choose from around the school locality. Most involve climbing stiles, crossing fields (always on a public footpath), walking round the orchards, using the ‘kissing’ gate. There are lots of opportunities to look and see what is around us in our environment. A lovely way to finish the week!

Class 1

As part of our topic on Castles we had a fantastic visit to Raglan Castle.  The children enjoyed climbing the many steps, especially to the top of the tower where we looked out at the surrounding countryside.

Ms Philpotts a student teacher from Worcester University has been workingin Class 2.  The class enjoyed learning about The Titanic.  The children imagined they were a passenger on the ship and wrote some diary entries.  They made the paper look old to represent how long ago the event took place and how the diaries would look today.

Class 3 have been experimenting with different curry recipes of their own.  They made the curries and served them to the rest of the school as part of our harvest lunch.  The recipes are listed below if you would like to try them.  They were delicious!
