Class 1

Class 1 – Autumn term 2008

Our topics this term are ‘Castles’ up until half term, followed by the ‘The Village and local environment’ after half term.

These topics will be cross curricular and included in most areas of the curriculum. In Science they will learn about different materials and their properties. This will follow on to learning about plants and food, investigating where their food comes from.  In RE they will learn about Special People, and then Faith communities. There will be plenty of role play opportunities in the classroom, and hopefully some real experiences with an educational visit to a castle. In technology they will practise fixing and joining, making a model castle, and Christmas crafts at the end of the term. In art they will work on colour, line, Autumn and Christmas. Class 1 will have P.E. lessons for half a term followed by swimming sessions, every Tuesday afternoon.  We will continue with our seasonal class walks around the village and surrounding area and also our weekly short ‘welly walk’ every Friday afternoon, rain or shine. Please supply wellies every Friday!

Class 2

Art and technology this term will be on the theme of robots. We will be using machine parts to create patterns and using computers to help make pictures of robots. We will make 3-D models of robots and give them lighting up eyes controlled by a simple switch. Work in science will help us learn more about the simple electrical circuits we will be using in our robots. We will also learn about forces, such as friction and gravity. In music we will be learning a song about robots and composing robot music. Our geography project on improving the local environment continues from last term. We hope to produce some booklets describing a local walk.

In Literacy this term we are listening to, discussing and writing our own myths. After half term we shall also be reading and writing some poetry and writing some information texts.

In maths we are working on solving word problems and number puzzles and later in the term we shall be doing work on data, measures and telling the time.

Our topic this term is about Buildings. We are looking at the different uses of buildings including religious buildings, doing some work about our homes, and looking at some older buildings. After half-term we will be visiting The Judge’s Lodgings in Presteigne as part of this topic.

Our DT project will be designing and making a model fairground ride powered by a small battery and motor. We will be trying our hand at some fairground art and also trying to represent music in paintings. In music we will be concentrating on rhythm and inventing instrumental accompaniments for rap poems. We will continue to learn some simple French, mostly to do with our families.
